Philly, How Do I Measure My Head For Wigs and Custom Units?

Measurement Chart: When ordering a custom unit it is necessary to record your exact measurements for a proper fit. It is recommended that you re-measure 2 or 3 times to assure you have proper size.

*Before you start: Pin hair as flat and as tight as possible before taking the measurements. This will eliminate bulges that distort head contours.
*Please follow the provided steps 1-6, The measuring unit used is inches.*

1. The Circumfrence of the Head: Measure all around the head. Position tape measure so its edge follows the hair line around the head and nape of the neck. (Average measurement is 22" inches).

2.From Forehead to Nape of Neck: Measure from hairline at center of forehead straight back over crown to center of hairline at nape of neck. (Average measurement is 13 1/2 inches).

3.Ear to Ear accross Front Hairline: At front of ear, measure from hairline at base of sideburn, up across the hair line along forehead to same point in front of other ear. (Average measurement is 11 1/2 inches).

4.From Ear to Ear over the Top of Head: Measure from hairline directly above the ear across top of head to the hairline directly above the other ear. (Average measurement is 11" inches ).

5.Point to Point:From temple to temple across the back of head. (Average measurement is 14 inches).

6.Nape of Neck: Measure the width of hairline across the nape of the neck. (Average measurement is 6 inches).

Music and Downloads...FINALLY!

I have been getting the questions and trust me I have been listening.  I have been busy working to re-release Smokin' Word that I put out in 2008 or 2009. Which is back out in a Deluxe version due to some added new tracks.

I made sure to add this to the media tab on my blog.  Also I will be putting out a mixtape called "Mirrors" that you guys have been requesting off of my videos.  The most popular one you have requested is the intro song "You".  I try my best to listen to you all and have provided a way for you to download or have your own copies.

Do You Want Your Best Body Back? - Shaun T says...

3 Rules for Eating to Getting a Smaller Body:

1. Taper off your carbs - Eat more of your carbs in the morning. They give you the most energy throughout the day.
Breakfast:  40% Carbs, 30% Protein, 30% Fat (600 Calorie Limit)
Lunch: 25% Carbs, 30% Fat, 45% Protein  (450 Calories)
Dinner: 15% Carbs, 55% Protein, 30% Fat (about 350 Calories)

Rule of Thumb: Eat like a King for Breakfast, Like a Prince for Lunch, and Like a Pauper for Dinner

2. Secret Ingredient - Sweet Potatoes - At least two servings a day
Sweet Potatoes is considered a powerhouse food.

3. Foods that expire within a week are important.  If it doesn't expire in a week - Stay away from it!
Packaged Fruit or Fruit cups are heavy in sugar! Not good for your body. Get fresh fruit vs. Packaged Fruit
Natural and Fresh Goods will help.  If you do Oatmeal - don't do instant.

Exercise: 15 Minute Routine A Day: MAX INTERVAL TRAINING - Continues to burn Calories after work out
"Don't do what I do, do what you can do."<-- Don't worry if you can't keep up with Shaun, do what you can do and work your way up.

Insanity!!!!! --- and then Alternatives

I get a lot of questions regarding staying fit.  I am a curvy female and I have a best friend who's metabolism is freakishly on point.  I have to work to make sure my curves do not get out of control.  I like to switch up exercise and do fun things to stay in shape.  I have talked about this on my videos before and most recently my husband brought INSANITY into the household.

I like to stay fit, but I will tell you there is nothing fun about Insanity.  It guarantees results, which you do get if you don't die first.  I tried Insanity for a week and I have to say I did not have the discipline or desire to continue.  I did not want to be out of shape for the summer and I had some ultra cute swimsuits that I needed to be right for. So...

After experiencing collapse in the middle of the floor and nearly throwing up...- I QUIT!!!! No gray t-shirt for me.

I watch Dr. Oz a lot so here I found an awesome alternative that I can handle. - I will share this in a moment.

Let's recap previous fitness things I participate in:

  • Biggest Loser on Wii (fun and helpful)
  • Let's Move (Move Ya Body) Beyonce's Flash Dance workout
  • Elliptical Machine
  • Dancing With My Son
  • Walks around the neighborhood (My neighborhood has extreme hills)

I have access to Kennesaw Mountain which is closer than stone mountain - these are good too, BUT I never feel like the drive so I do things in my own home.

I am a big fab of muscle confusion to prevent plateau so I will change up my work routines and mix it up to keep my muscles working.

Here is the newbie I have added:

Shaun T's 15 minute Max Interval Workout that will offer results in 30 days.  Please see link here:

http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/shaun-ts-miracle-15-minute-workout

This is not fun, BUT it's only 15 minutes!

So for now I have this routine:

  1. Good Morning: 15 minute Max Interval
  2. Afternoon Son gets home: Beyonce Get Me Bodied
  3. Early Evening: 20 Minute Elliptical
  4. After Dinner Walk

I will do this in combination with eating right and will let you know what my 45 day results are.

Current Standing:

5'7"
147lbs
34D, 26 Waist, 41 hips

Stay tuned

Pitfalls and Failures of DIY Coloring

BEFORE
AFTER

Hello Good Peoples,

I figured I would share with you some hits and misses when it comes to dying hair/wigs/weaves.  I do not dye my natural hair, but I do have a thing for changing up my wigs and giving them a funky look.  Sometimes I just get tired of looking at a solid color and want to give it pizazz.

Here are a few things that worked for me and that I am sure to do:

Brush Out hair with a loop brush
Use Detangler to ensure no tangles

To lighten I use:

Clairol Born Blonde Maxi

To darken I use:

Clairol Nice and Easy

I will typically draw a diagram and plan how I want the wig to look and then place it on the wig head.  If I am only dying sections, I will clip and tie off the hair I do not plan to dye.

As the wigs set in the color, if it is a nice day  - I will set them out on the back porch and let the natural light and heat continue to assist the bleaching process.  I ensure to check periodically on the coloring process since I know exactly what I want the color to look like.

I will wash in cool water and use the coloring shampoo and conditioner.  I will always make sure to seal the knots and let the unit air dry.

I show you in the video products that just simply did not work for me.

PhoenixJodiRae...Silk Top Winner - "I Smile"

I had just finished rearranging my office when I was about to call it a night. I had an email waiting on me and the Silk Top Winner posted her video.  I opened the video and instantly cried.  I won't sermon on this blog, but I will post my sentiments in a song...

My Mother made a decision to start new chapters in her life and on her 50th birthday celebration she had asked me..."Mika, please have the DJ play, "I Smile" by Kirk Franklin".  This is the song I want to make my entrance to my party on."  I had not heard the song before, but when the DJ began to play and she walked in ...she beamed.  Only she and I know the road that she and I both traveled, but the song was perfect.

I watched Jody's video, I blew my dearly departed Grandmother a Kiss, and I played this song. - It made me smile.

Please offer kindness to someone's world, the payoff is priceless.  Do me a huge favor and no matter what comes your way - Smile.

This song is dedicated to everyone and with special love to my Mom and Grandmother.
Jody, As the radio would say, "Look at you now!" - You are still not your hair...it's all in your name. You are a Phoenix...you are light...which is why they call you "Rae"...Thanks for shining my way.

Know Thyself: Skin Type & Colors WOC

NOT TO BEAT A DEAD HORSE....BUUUUUUUT  :deadhorse:
There are so many forums, videos, and conversations with regards to skin matching and foundation coloring for WOC (Women of Color).  I’m not even on the soapbox  when it comes to that, I am in total discovery!  I love to share, so lets go!

A little about me:

Skin Type:

My skin type is not Oily, Not Dry, and not Combination. I am lucky enough to have what is classified as a “normal” skin.  I do not have break outs and have never had issues with acne.  I get 1 pimple when it’s close to that time of the month and it’s always only one.  I had an issue when I broke out around the edges (temples and what not) that’s always when I have used some hair product that doesn’t agree.  The two big things that will break my edges out as sure as grits is grocery and fat back is greasy – JAM…or Let’s Jam.  I use to love it, but the edges cannot take it!  It can’t take the Elasta QP either.  It’s something about that makeup that does not work.

My Color and Undertones

My color undertone is Neutral.

MAC will teach you or forums will teach you what the NC, N, NW means on their foundations and concealers mean. N= Neutral, C = Cool, W= Warm. Etc. True story, I have gotten mad at MAC for matching me and my mom.  MAC had me too dark with their staple default NC45.  When in doubt…NC45!  Yeah right.  Whoever matched my mom should have their behinds whipped because they gave her NW45 and had her looking straight orange!  What THE FLIP WILSON!...

Most articles will you most women of color have warm undertones which is why most MAC artist will put you either in an NW or NC45.

There are tests to determine if you are a Cool or Warm undertone:

What do you look best in Gold or Silver?

What color are the veins on your forearm?

White Towel Test

Hair Color as a Kid

When I perform these test and especially the vein test I have a mixture of both.   For me, they say that although I am neutral I will lean more one way than the other.  Meaning I will look great in one and amazing or fabulous as another.  I can’t tell what is most favorable for me, but can say I am lucky that I can wear all kinds of colors when it comes to hair color, eyeshadow, and clothing.

Some people will say that I really pop as a blonde and others willl say I really look exotic or alluring with dark hair. I am unsure where I pull more towards yet, in my opinion COOL does it for me. My preference is Silver jewelry (Cool), however I have such a love for blonde hair (warm).

The face that I am a Brown-Eyed Normal Neutral is pretty cool!

Below is just a range of pictures of different hair colors that will go from cool to warm undertones.  Understanding when it comes to hair styles and colors everyone will not like EVERYTHING!...Keep that in mind.
